anime especially in the west was a niche thing where stories that would be too expensive to be told or otherwise prohibitive to shoot live were told it was a small thing and the good stuff filtered to america in the nineties, it went from having cult appeal to having mass appeal and then anime was produced to meet the demand of broad undiscerning western audiences and the quality dropped massively. if you watch modern anime you have terrible taste

you can do this day find countless good animes made before the year 2001 and i can think of only one post that period, it was not the japanese and im not even blaming americans what im saying is that early on in the west people who cared about movies would talk about anime because it was a niche thing, then it blew up the normies hopped on the bandwagon and then anime started being produced to have broad appeal to cater to this booming market in the west. its been shit ever since
