Dexter is one of the things that everyone should have stopped using their precious brain juice on about 10 years ago

Because nothing ever ends anymore. It is always open ended so if it's popular enough they can keep it going. And then when every last drop that can be squeezed out is gone it gets shuttered and canceled on a cliffhanger.
