Not true race is at the center of this film. Its implied that the accused is not white but his exact race is not specified. The characters say things like 'you know how those people are' the implication of the story is that whites who were a majority in cities like NY at that time must guard against prejudice they might have against more recent immigrants and make sure to give them the presumption of innocence. Originally it was a TV teleplay back in the early days of TV when they did plays with moral lessons. The TV version has a different actor in the henry fonda role since he can be sanctimonious and preachy.
