For the Harks it made sense, in the books they kill each other for sport to weed out the weak. Which is why Feyd-Rautha had a side hustle involving the Baron's eventual assassination, because he thought the fat man was dead weight after being cursed by the Bene Gesserit

Dune had some issue with the acting that was likely not the fault of the actors.
Most of the actors in Dune, and the sequel, who had performances that were somewhat flat, have done much better work in multiple other projects.
I suspect Villeneuve gave the actors bad advice, or was just over his head with the scale of the project, so he didn’t gave time to get the necessary performances.
Actors who necessarily need to show up and do the job with little on set prep work might have been a better choice.
Eric Roberts fir instance, or anybody else with decent roles in the past, who now has 200+ IMDB credits.
