The Kryptonians in this movie are pretty much a stand-in for Palestinians and Muslims.
You had Superman who learned how to integrate himself, somewhat, and eventually had to prove that he was an ally, and you had Zod's crew that were essentially jihadists. Zod, like some super Osama Bin Laden, was never going to go lethargic and suicidal. Well, not lethargic, anyhow.
This is also why the Kryptonians refused to live as super-powered beings on Earth, because that meant being part of the degenerative west and be contaminated with their filth and sinful way of life. The west had to be purged.
