Whether true or not, that's irrelevant. He doesn't look like the character. The fact remains that Snape isn't black. Just like he isn't a woman, isn't young, isn't a Honduran midget in a wheel-chair, isn't purple & 20-feet tall, and any number of other defining facts.
Fans want adaptions to ACTUALLY reflect what is being adapted. That includes characters that look like they're supposed to. It's that simple.
That means you find the best actor you can get that ALSO resembles the character they're playing. Adaptions rarely, if ever, had a problem doing this in previous decades, so they should still be able to do it now. The problem isn't that they can't, though; they just won't.
