Tom Cruise wasn't wrong here. Most people currently hooked on SSRIs don't actually have anything wrong with them. If your life is consistently sad and/or stressful (as most lives are) then you don't have "anxiety" and/or "depression" - you're just responding to your environment. If anything you'd be insane not to feel down and stressed constantly in light of your circumstances. You're not insane or special, you're just like anyone else. Drowning out your feelings with mind-altering drugs constantly isn't actually addressing your problems, it's just a means by which you become more comfortable with your own suffering. It does nothing for most aside from engendering complacency.
