I don't think there is enough there for cage to dig into, the role is too subtle for him. Connery is a nothing burger of an actor, he would have given Gandalf a scottish accent I suppose?

Denethor had the worst of it but Gondor as a whole got fucked in the movies, especially compared to Rohan. That scene where Gandalf has to order the archers on the wall to aim for the trolls because they're pointlessly wasting their arrows on the siege towers they're pushing... Boromir was the only Gondor man who got to do cool stuff, everyone else got clowned (Faramir and his ranger killed some dudes before getting btfo I guess, but the script also had him deciding to bring Frodo and the One Ring to Minas Tirith for the sake of dumb drama).

Fellowship was the best of the trilogy by far.
