The final scene at the cafe spells it out, Julio informs Tenoch that a close friend of them came out and got kicked out by his parents, so he moved in with his boyfriend and Julio observes that the guy seems pretty happy, as if to say "Don't worry bro, it's not the end of the world if we just fuck", but Tenoch gets cold feet and leaves in a panic while Julio sits there looking miserable, and the narrator clarifies they'll never meet again.
It's not really about gay or straight, it's pretty obvious both of them find women plenty attractive, it's about the tragic end to the closest relationship they ever had, because while their relationships with the women in their lives are superfluous and vain the two men achieved a level of intimacy they won't ever experience with anyone else.
