>pirate movies
It's just a subset of a swashbuckler flick. They died a long time ago in the 90s. And PoC was just the last hooray.

They were ridiculously expensive to make if you wanted any kind of verisimilitude and overall audience appeal is rather low in comparison to Noirs and Westerns which as I just stated were a lot cheaper and easier to make. Adjusted for inflation the biggest box office bomb ever was Cutthroat Island. And if were being truthful POTC was a huge lightning in the bottle moment. Jerry Bruckheimer had enough dough and passion for it to bankroll it and Johnny Depp gave a standout performance.

played out at this point..we've had realistic versions & more fantasicle...only so much you can do with a genre.

makes me wonder about movies in general. timeline wise it's a pretty recent thing...and we've run everything into the ground. everyone wonders why we get so many reboots and such, but there's only so many interesting stories to tell
