In case anyone's wondering, this is The Rose of Versailles, which is set a little before and during the French Revolution era, as it follows the main characters across their paths. The increasingly turbulent times get much in the way of happiness and safety. Along the series, the main characters also solve various mysteries, as well.

The manga and the original anime series are both much more comprehensive than the new anime film, which condenses the events quite a bit. You wouldn't see everything play out over around two hours, for instance. They had to pick which events were essential, and run with them for the runtime of the film. In my opinion, fans have been somewhat divided over it, but it has been met with a generally positive reception, and it is exposing the series to new people who might have otherwise not bothered with the original manga and anime.

There is the one from this year. It is generally well-received, but many fans are conflicted with its overtly quick pace, omitting or glossing over much of the materials of the manga. It would have been better as a miniseries format, or just a feature length anime series. It doesn't have to be 40+ episodes like the original series was in 1979/1980, but even about half of that number would have allowed for much breathing room for the stories to flow even better.
