This is the piece of media that convinced me that despite its seemingly peaceful status Japan has its own societal and cultural neuroses that are the equal if not greater than any other country in the West. A well adjusted society does not come up with the shit the author of Gantz did but I think it’s equally telling that people around still ate it up for more than just its shock value. If it was done right, it would be the next Squid Game unironically. It has all the elements that made Squid Game popular. A gamified death game. All they need to do is adjust the story and make the players able to cash out 10 million USD if they hit 100 points so normies can self-insert. It could be one of the greatest live actions of all time, but it also needs Japanese writers on the team to not wokeify it.

That's an understatement. It's a fucking masterpiece, one of the most batshit insane things to come from Japan honestly. So much blatant racism and genuine originality, it's seriously lightning in a bottle. All the other work from the creator is not even close to Gantz, even his spinoffs. Despite being shit in many technical areas the anime director managed to work with that limitation to really bring Gantz to life. It's very surreal. The soundtrack and some of the odd camera angles really stand out. One of my favorite animes.

Honestly after Squid Game I can see this working out for the audience, the moment the Gantz reveal the whole points system and people see that is just a "game" then could be good, the problem is to build the story around the characters because 80% of then are despiteful people and the general audience won't cheer for the guy who grabs the tits of the girl without her consent...

Would unironically work even if westernized. It's loud, non-subtle and unabashedly crass. You could just have a Gantz team in American that's fighting aliens represented of their culture like Japan or wherever.

An adaptation for Netflix, Amazon, HBO, whatever would simply be awful and we ought to be thankful nobody in the west picked it up.The action would be crap, the characters would be annoying woke assholes and it’d be directed by someone who doesn’t give a shit.
