Just got out of seeing this from the Amazon Prime early screening—did anyone else feel like the plot was a bit janky? The characters seemed really static, with minimal arcs that just moved from point A to B. It felt like the film tried to cram in as much as possible, relying on familiar faces to appeal to those who didn’t like Snyder’s take on the character.

While I don’t agree with everything Snyder did, I would’ve preferred a more sincere portrayal of the characters and their motivations. Superman Returns, for all its flaws, at least made an effort to convey some emotional depth when Singer directed it.

Right now, my ranking is:
1. Superman II (Donner Cut)
2. Superman: The Movie
3. Superman Returns
4. Man of Steel
5. Superman (2025)
6. Superman III
7. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

It definitely had a sincere portrayal of Superman's and Lex's motivations.
Moreso than MoS and Returns.
The plot was off though.

I mean yeah I thought Corensweat and Hoult were really great (outside of Corensweat doing the “aw gee golly shucks that felt kinda forced) I just didn’t feel anything with the way the film characterized any growth outside of Lex hating Superman more than he already did and Superman accepting his human side more? Idk I just felt like this should’ve been like The Batman for Superman and I’m disappointed

I kind of felt bad for Lex. He was evil as hell but the monologue where he genuinely believes his envy for Superman is the only thing that can save humanity was really interesting.
And Supes having to realize that he isn't defined by what everyone else thinks of him was, I felt kind of moving.
Especially the ending where he finally accepts the Kents as his parents.
But here's my question: why didn't anyone at the Daily Planet notice Clark was missing?
As for my ranking, I'd go:
1. Superman: The Movie
2. Superman 2: The Donner Cut
3. Superman
4. Superman Returns
5. MoS.
6. Superman 3
7. Superman and the Mole Men
8. Superman 4: The Quest for Peace

I'd say yeah, but just slightly.
There's more emotional sincerity here, and Superman isn't a quipper.
He's no Star-Lord.
But Lois?
She quips.

I liked the ending they had for Lex with the mask off Freudian slip about his envy and jealously right but the Superman embracing the Kent’s kinda feels like that should be already the case right? They did find him and raise him and Smallville did the whole rejecting Jor El thing in the show and how he only considers the Kents to be his parents. Doesn’t help IMO Lois’s arc is just not wanting to be serious with Superman? I think it could’ve been more interesting if they had dated and broke up and at the end they reconcile ig

No, nothing that cringe.
The humor is most personality based. Not gimmick based.
>>212507385
I guess they made it like how The Batman didn't have him respecting Alfred.
He felt more understood by his alien parents than his human ones.
That is until their values differed.
But Lois was weak as hell here.
Very girly stuff.
Should I be with Superman? Should I not?
Lame.

I wasn't with it at first since the pacing was kind of off and it just jumped, but about half an hour in I was pretty sold. It's a lot of fun, and while I would've maybe preferred it to be 20 minutes longer to slow down the pace a bit I still really enjoyed it. Lex and Superman were great imo.
>>212507188
I thought so, yeah. Probably one of Gunns least humor-filled movies. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of humor but Superman himself doesn't quip at all.

The Batman is better, definitely.
It's just hard to do Superman without ruining the character.
So you keep him good, which is his personality, and have him stay that way despite the odds.
It can be boring, but I thought they did their best with something different.
Snyder's Superman just took way too long to find himself.

Yeah, it just kinda felt at points like a course correction for the general public’s perception of the character from where we last saw him. Doesn’t help like the emotional stake is the Indian hot dog guy Lex kills and the plot tells us overtly no one cares about this guy whereas in The Batman, Alfred literally almost dies Y’know. I’m glad people enjoyed it but I just wished this film had more sincerity if that’s the word for it without offending anyone.

I can see people not liking the falafel bit. I thought it helped show how evil this Lex was.
Playing Russian roulette with a random broke brown guy just because he helped Superman.
And killing him too. A big kick the dog moment.
As for offense, none taken. I think you mean more emotional stakes? It sounds like you felt it was a bit shallow in characterization.
Unless you felt the emotions it did show were ironic or shielded behind humor?

Like conceptually it’s a great scene for Lex showing his callousness and I guess sociopathic mindset to getting what he wants, it’s like you said it has no real emotional stakes to it. It just kinda moves the plot forward to convince Metamorpho (is that his name?) to help Superman save him and his son (wasn’t a big fan of the action sequence that ensued after that IMO either) Also how did that many people disappear without anyone in Metropolis or whatever notice? I think that was a missed opportunity for Lois and Clark Kent to investigate but w/e

Lex's motivation is torturing Superman. So it makes sense he'd use this random guy who particularly really likes Superman just to flex his power.
But yeah, the emotional stakes are low.
I'm guessing Metamorpho had never seen Lex do that. He just locked people up, and didn't kill them.
I liked Lois doing the investigating and Clark doing the fighting, personally.
As for the people, I think it was far more widespread than just citizens of Metropolis. He said many were people from other countries, I.e. Political opponents.

I can get feeling disappointed.
The Batman was, at the risk of sounding faggoty, very different.
Superman is just a return to form.
For me, who really hated DCEU, that's enough.
But for fans like you who wanted more, I get feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Does Superman get called Superman a lot or does Gunn just do the usual superhero movie thing of everyone calling him by his civilian name? Like how they kept calling Iron Man by Tony or Stark instead of Iron Man throughout his MCU appearances. Or how Gunn himself used Quill instead of Star-Lord for much of his GotG trilogy.
TL;DR is he usually addressed as Clark or Kent rather than Superman?

1. Superman II (Donner Cut) (9/10)
2. Superman: The Movie (8.5/10)
3. Superman Returns (7/10)
4. Man of Steel (6.8/10)
5. Superman (2025) (6.5/10)

I think '25 Superman is a pretty solid 7-8.5 range. Superman Returns I think I like less than MOS - Superman is just... a really weird freak in that movie. The cuck plotline just doesn't sit well with me either. MOS is just fine, IMO. A decent enough movie, while I disagree with its take on Superman, the action is probably the best in the genre. Can't go wrong with that.

I saw the film with my brother and he scored it similar to you but I don’t know my perception of the film differed greatly. I think the pacing, characters that could’ve gone without being included (Justice Gang primarily), meaningful character arcs, the subplot revolving around the (I’m assuming an Ukraine/Russia metaphor). That whole sequence where they were escaping from the pocket dimension and I didn’t feel anything from what I was seeing kinda cemented in my mind something was wrong. I should also mention I don’t particularly like James Gunn’s films outside of GOTG 1 and half of Suicide Squad and I didn’t see GOTG 3
