>>212509931>we didn't scrutinize it at allmaybe you didn't (I didn't either) but there are a lot of retards who screech about "muh meaningless Christian symbolism". there's always a couple in these threads. the point of it is that the show had broadly spiritual themes which Anno wanted to convey with the imagery, but it didn't adhere strictly to a single religious canon. and so he chose foreign (to Japan) religious imagery so that people wouldn't get hung up on it not being "true" Buddhism.
it does have similarities to rapture, and also Buddhist ego death, imo it's closest to the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, but they're all similar concepts anyway. a lot of religions have similar themes and ideas just presented through different lenses. that's why I say it's just a broadly spiritual show, Anno was clearly inspired by several different religions but doesn't stick to any one in particular.
