The guy on the radio at the end says the “invasion” was basically a smash-and-grab, and that the aliens snatched up a bunch of people and then fucked off to parts unknown. What happened to the people who got abducted? That has fucked with my head for decades now.

It wasn't a smash and grab. It was just a plot hole. Somehow Aliens have the technological advancements for interstellar space travel to come all the way to our planet and invade us but somehow didn't have the tech to realize that 3/4ths of the planet is covered in the one thing that can harm them? Don't get me wrong, it's a fun flick but it's also retarded. No way you try to invade a planet and don't do research on said planet.

It's not a plot hole if they say that it was a raid in the film. They also mention at one point that none of the houses near the lake are being attacked, so obviously the aliens knew what water was, and knew it was dangerous to them, beforehand.
