Death Note made me realize I hate nearly every manga I've ever read. It starts off wonderfully, reaches a climax when the detective guy croaks, and then it starts adding more and more convolutions to the plot. Stopped caring after 2/3rds were done. Same with anime.

I remember getting tired of Berserk when pajeets got introduced and when super saiyan nonsense aka berserker armor became central to Guts' character and everything ceased to matter. Japanese are incapable of writing a decent plot, which is why my favorite author of theirs is Nihei who just draws fuckhuge structures.

Death Note is slightly affected by this, but at the end of the day it managed to only be 12 books and like 28 books long. Whatever padding in the story is still readable/watchable and it reaches its conclusion without leaving you out of it, I think.
