The Ewoks were losing until Chewbacca turned the tide of battle with that captured walker.
Also the generator defence force wasn't that big. They didn't anticipate anyone ever attacking the generator.
But it is a bit funny how Kenobi says "only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise" at the start of ANH and from then on they can't hit anything at all for three movies.
