All the humans of Zion are actually machine AIs in a simulation, being taught by REAL humans what's it like to live enslaved and being in fear of machines.
The movie ends hinting that what the lie of how a machine war started might actually happen despite the real humans psychotic hailmary attempt to prevent it.

You pull a Superman, have Neo face a problem that he can't simply solve with kung fu. The impending war of man against machine is fast approaching. There is division within Zion as Neo is reluctantly being used as a puppet of certain leaders to win over crowds and shut down opposition by appealing to his authority. It gets so bad people within Zion begin to worship Neo and he finds that his followers are becoming dependent and cult-like, they excuse his every fault and creating meaning in his every action even where there are none. Simultaneously, after an initial wave of success, Neo is struggling with freeing people from the Matrix finding that more and more people refuse to accept the truth and want to live in the comfort of machine rule. There can still be a threat he has to fight with his fists at the end like the Smith virus but the primary focus is on how he is handling being The One and how there is growing concern that even with Neo the humans are still going to lose to the machines.

So here's my pitch:
The 90s matrix that Neo comes from isn't the only matrix and there are tons of virtual worlds out there.

One for every scenario you could imagine.

To free humanity Neo must go into these worlds and find the core terminal, hack it and get out before the world implodes. If he does this to a few lodestone matrix the rest will all fall automatically. All the while he is being tracked down by Agent Smiths.

The matrix worlds he must hack are:
>Tudor England (where he ends up jousting against King Henry VIII)
>Titty dinosaur island (a bit like Jurassic Park but all the dinosaus have MASSIVE tits now)and
>Shogun Japan (he fights Anjin, the British Samuri, the most powerful and coolest samuri of all time)

If a third part is needed just make up another 3 cool sounding worlds. Also fuck all the IRL and zion shite that ruined the 3rd film, the machines can destroy it at the start of part 2 making this a sci-fi revenge movie trilogy.

As demonstrated by all the terrible takes in this thread, in terms of story, Reloaded and Revolutions are the perfect follow-up to the matrix. If there had to be sequels, there couldn’t have been anything better and you should be thankful you got a second part as ambitious as Reloaded and a proper ending to the main characters in Revolutions. You may not like some of the acting, or some of the CGI but the plot was creative and worthy. Why don’t you ask people to pitch a fourth film given that matrix 4 was actually a piece of worthless cash-grab junk.

it really didnt. neo may have been near-invincible in the matrix, but his friends werent, and he finds out he knows way less than he thought he did. he is constantly having the rug pulled from under him despite his powers in the two sequels. its one thing they do well imo.
