Donโ€™t like to regurgitate 4chanisms but yeah this. The mining colony was the single fresh idea it had. Everything else was a considerably less interesting version of something weve already seen.

It was terrible since they've just flanderized it from the actual good setting of Aliens. Now they're no longer happy colonists working for something better, they're le slaves, indebted for life, who work til they die, then their offspring are slaves too.

I actually liked how the cast was all zoomers
It felt topical and relevant given how zoomers irl feel trapped and desperately want to escape from a hyper-capitalist corporate work culture that doesn't properly reward their efforts and keeps them stuck in a neverending rat race of servitude. The mining colony setting was great at showing this in how the company just arbitrarily boosts contractual working years on a whim and lives are cut short working in the mines themselves. Then they venture into space and come face to face with the real monster: corporate nostalgia and necromancy.

I got the impression that the setting of Aliens and Romulus are totally different types of places and societies. Just like Earth can have relatively peaceful and free countries and wartorn dystopias on the same planet, the universe can have human colonies serving different purposes.

>how the company just arbitrarily boosts contractual working years on a whim
They canonically don't do that though. They have very good and fair contracts that they strictly abide by and workers enjoy being employed by them. It was a shock for the company to do something unusually cruel to them in Alien.

Alien was literally always a cyberpunk dystopia setting where Weyland-Yutani had way too much power. I'm sure there are clean-looking better-off colonies, but what we see in the mining colony are the "slums" of human society, which would definitely exist in a megacorporation-controlled sci-fi future

it was entertaining slop.
all the fan service was unnecessary in my opinion, it could have done without.
the story is clearly a mix of ALL the other movies almost... maybe apart from Alien3? I think it was more entertaining than anything after Aliens to be honest... I would considering myself a diehard fan of Alien.
Idk, All the sequels since Aliens where pretty trash and this I found entertaining at least.
