Is Paul W.S. Anderson a great director who stopped trying, or is he a hyper-derivative hack who got lucky, ala Quentin Tarantino?

Both. His best film was Event Horizon. After he met his wife he began stunt casting her in everything and turned his productions into expensive family holidays.

I can't blame him either. He's living the best life and even cloned his wife in his daughter.

He has a knack for executing ideas in a really cool way, but it seems obvious in hindsight how everything he makes after about 2000 is him watching a movie and then putting things out of that movie in his movie. Alien vs. Predator has so many scenes and shots and lines of dialogue almost verbatim from other movies. He walks a very fine line between homage (because he does talk a lot about the films he loves) and ripoff. I realized a while ago that the line, "You can't kill me!" in the RE movies is a direct reference to the villain in John Carpenter's Vampires.
