I've been told throughout my life how much this film was a triumph of philosophy and film art. So, I finally sat down and watched it from beginning to end. It was nothing but pretentious boring trash.

There is nothing pretentious about the discussion they had. You would never be able to have a conversation with any friend like this in real life because most people are close minded and don't want to hear anything beyond what's trending on Netflix.

At the time it came out, it was pushed as being an artistic/innovative film. So; (at least around the time it came out), you either liked it, claimed to have liked it, or were labeled as too stupid to 'get' the film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLdihwpMRkw

It's not a horrible movie; but I don't know that it's necessarily a great film either. Meanwhile, Wallace Shawn, the guy on the left in OP's image; had a far better part playing the Grand Nagus in Star Trek DS9

It's not a movie. Movies have characters and action and tell a story. This has none of that. It's just two guys talking (which is a podcast). Nothing wrong with being a podcast.

the entire point is that both of them are kind of pretentious and pseudo-intellectuals in their own way, Andre is rich and able to afford to travel the world and do a bunch of upper class hippy bullshit and "connect with nature" in a way most people simply cant. his idea of people needing to shed the confines of modern society and let go of "things" is only achievable because of his wealth, though it did obviously have a profound effect on him and tere is some validity to it. while Wally is too stuck in his ways, too attached to his routines and his creature comforts to the point that he dismisses any validity to what Andre is talking about, though he does have a point that you can feel profound things and find revelation in one's regular, average life. you arent supposed to side with either, which they've both said was their goal when writing it, and in fact they wrote it specifically so that either one of them could play either character truthfully and genuinely.

it's a really brilliant piece of writing desu, I revist the movie periodically through my life and find myself agreeing and disagreeing with different parts as I age

I found Stalker hard to follow. I had read the short story before and it was way more straightforward.

You have to remember this was the 80s and people's minds were different.
Also overtly this is the epitome of a midwit promoted by the evil that controls our world.
