The point of the movie is to make you uncomfortable. The villiains look at the camera, they wink at you, and break the 4th wall at numerous times making you an accomplice to their crimes. The only way to stop it is to stop watching the film. But you don't stop, you keep at it. You are making it happen, you have the power to stop it in your remote but you don't.

Talking about the German version, ofc, if you watch remakes because subtitles le scary you don't belong here.

At least this one was shot for shot and didn't shit on the original like Speak No Evil in order to censor the message about how mindlessly welcoming immigrants can sometimes being a bad thing.

What really made this movie (the original 1997 make) great for me was not the central message about violence and entertainment. But the performance of the two antagonists and their ability to leave you in total frustration with their sadistic autism. Even when they are clearly revealed as killer home invaders and thus depraved, they somehow offended me even more with their subversive mind games. What they say and how they chose to say it was so perfectly written. They maintain a posture throughout the film as if they are mannered and guided by some form of reason. And that they too have been inconvenienced, and should be acknowledged for that fact. Even tiny remarks like "Begging for the eggs was humiliating" or "So much stress for politeness' sake" exasperated me. I felt it when the father begged the shitheads to just be normal psychos and murder them already. To which he refuses, which reinforces the main crux of the film. I'm sure there is a lot of disagreement over the director's conflation of cinema and reality. But even if I disagree, the performances were absolutely compelling to the director's argument. I have never felt more agitated watching a movie before.
