I recently rewatched Breaking Bad, and I was surprised by how differently I saw everything. The first time I watched it, I was a teenager. I was hooked by the twists, Walt's intelligence and the unpredictable story. Now in my 30s, I see depth in characters I couldn't see when I was young.
Walt is extremely manipulative toward Jesse. As a teen, I thought Walt was always trying to protect him. But now I see how he often spins stories about other people being threats, just to keep Jesse loyal. It reminds me of a narcissistic boss I once had. He also always acted like people are out to get me but he was the one blocking my promotion because he needed me around. Just like Jesse, I had little life exprience back then and couldn't recognize the abuse.
Todd is a textbook psychopath. On the surface he seems polit, but underneath there's nothing: no empathy, no guilt. I once had a roommate who gave off similar vibes. We knew something was off but we couldn't put our finger on it. Several years later, when I mentioned him to an old classmate he said "Oh yeah! The guy who had no guilt!"
Saul Goodman is hiding a pain that I can see now. The constant jokes are not just about grabbing his clients attentions but hiding his deep pain. Many funny guys I met were actually hurt deep inside.
And I dont know how many Lydias I have met. White collar corporate executives who will do anything as long as they are sure they can get away with it. She doesn't seem unnatural to me anymore, just disturbingly familiar.
Just something I needed to tell someone on a Saturday night.
