What is drawing Cameron to this material over everything else? He could make anything.

He said he liked the books. And he's never done straight up fantasy before, so there's the novelty of that, too.

Disagree, the first three books are great, even the standalones are good. After that...yeah...shit sucks

Reminder that some dumb cunt asked him why there were no "strong womyn" in the first law trilogy in a interview and every single book since then has been feminist girlboss slop.

nta but I wasn't expecting to be that good, like someone once said on /lit/ "I was expecting the guy who wrote everything after the third book". It's a pity becaue the characters are so good you feel they deserved a better author in the end.

>first three books are great
I want you to know that this is a genuine question: Why?

Spoilers, obviously, for anyone who wants to discover why these books suck on their own, but:
>zero character arcs
>prose is incredibly repetitive
>every 15 words glokta grimaces at something
>every character has a catchphrase or two
>quai being switched out is the most obvious thing in the world
>bayaz being a prick is the most obvious thing in the world
>entirety of book two is a harrowing journey where nearly every step kills them ending with them finally reaching their destination battered and changed, book three begins with "anyways we're back home"
>logan is actually super evil because of a bunch of deeds he never ever thought about in all of his chapters
>black fucking dow of all people takes the moral high ground and kicks logan out
>magical super aids is inconsistently applied and given to west so the author can continue stroking himself over his fans talking about how mean he is
That's what comes to mind right away after having read them several years ago. I kept waiting for it to get good, but I knew in the beginning of book three it'd remain shit but I'd have to finish it anyways.

Zero character arcs. Glokta is the only halfway decently handled character in the series. West, too, but he's utterly squandered. What >>212555044 said is right.

>starts off as a privileged prettyboy who doesn't want to work hard and simply wants to live an easy life fucking west's sister casually
>begins to grow into someone who can take risks, apply himself, and is willing to openly love west's sister
>is told by bayaz to be a privileged king (with a scar now!) and not work hard and not take risks and live an easy life, and also somehow believes west's sister will be okay being his sidepiece
His arc is a flat line. But, willing as you are to try and pick apart my criticisms, what about these books do you actually like? I can't figure out what would compel people to be fans of this series. There were parts I liked - his use of myth and disputed history felt realistic and engaging, the villains were looming and imposing, many characters (even side ones like threetrees) had bones that would've made them very memorable in the hands of another author, but abercrombie fucked up thing after thing and glued it all together with bad prose that left me utterly baffled as to how so many people were praising the series.

Douglass Russel for Jakob of Thorn. Relatively unknown, great actor, same gravely voice and the face that's as if been smashed over and over by a sledgehammer
