If it'd been cancelled after the first season it would've joined the ranks of great shows sadly cut down too soon. The worst thing that happened to it was that it kept getting renewed.

Kino of the highest order, one of the best to ever do it and I doubt we're going to see a show like it ever again. Ending made my cry like a bitch, not afraid to admit it.
People evangelize S1 because it was a novel tv-show (even tho it aped Fincher's style completely) that captured the zeitgeist and sorta worked well as a standalone story... but in the context of the whole plot it was merely the prologue and it served as a false start. It was also in this weird territory, where it was obviously very pseud about it's subject matter, so tp redditors it was genius, to people with a brain it was angsty teen crap. So yes, from the outset it seemed like Reddit: The Show, but later on a lot of that is turned on its head.
S2 seemingly halted everything that people thought the story was going to be about, the pacing slowed waaay down which meant that people watching weekly bounced off of it.
But it sets up so much for S3 and 4 where it's just non-stop payoff. Directorial work starting from S2 is also so much more inspired, they've crammed so much creative shit in this show and I have no idea where this idea of it dropping in quality comes from.

The first season was superb for a while (other than the character not being an incel) because the show really captured the millenial Zeitgeist in 2015 but then during filming the 2nd season the summer of Trump happened and the entire Zeitgeist of the planet turned on its ear and the show was too far along in production to capture it again.
