He's popular as kind of a side-character. He's always in the Justice League, in a lot of their cartoons, etc. Nobody actually really gives a shit about Green Lantern's personality though, just the ring and their powers are cool since they're space-cops. Kind of like Jedi in that way. One of them is black too so it allows DC to fill the diversity quota.
