Even the original series would fluctuate between "kino" and "the worst tv I have ever seen" season to season and even episode to episode. With that being said I enjoyed the prequel, and the first 2 episode of resurrection have been okay, even with all the ridiculous handwaving of previous events(which if we are being honest is the norm with Dexter).

I think it's more that they felt like they wrote themselves into a corner with him killing Coach Logan (which was the point back when New Blood was going to be the perma ending), and they couldn't find a good way to confront or address it in Resurrection while keeping Dexter sympathetic, so they went with mostly ignoring the Logan kill and avoiding talking about it
