I watched this movie at a recommendation and I hated it. My reasoning for doing so was not out of its mechanical merit as a work of filmmaking but because I find it ideologically and philosophically repugnant.

I didn’t find Pyle to be a sympathetic character. Before I saw the movie I thought they were draft kiddies, but no they made the choice to join the marines so I’m just like “suck it up buttercup”. Other than that the boot camp half is pretty good. It really takes a nosedive when they get to Vietnam, because that act alternates between generic war movie and Soviet propaganda levels of vilifying the American military
