Like Akira, its mainly praised for its visuals. And like Akira, its fairly obvious that the movie tells a heavily condensed version of the original story.

The original GitS is purely about the animation quality and soundtrack. The story is pretentious Oshii slop (no wonder he and Kojima linked up) and the original Stand Alone Complex does it better.

When people talk about the philosophically dense GiTS, they're mainly talking about SAC. The OG film is mostly an actioner that served as a great introduction to the questions SAC would pose at the expense of flashiness. The 2nd film and manga are more like SAC as well.

I've also noticed the Japs have an absolute fascination with Christianity, the Puppet Master is an AI God that wants to become embodied the same way God was embodied in Jesus Christ.
