specifically, it was his fuckup in book 5 combined with draco's fuckups from book 6. i think the books explains that he couldn't have his job at the ministry anymore and the open market was flooded with dark objects so his sources of revenue were dogshit. his house became voldemore HQ for some reason too, so he didn't have any privacy. he really was just showing up to work and hoping vodlemore wouldn't randomly decide to kill him mid-meeting
