Because it is scary, you dumb zoomer retard.
In the second book (which are highly different than the film) sadako is being reborn as a fully grown up 19 year old girl in 1992 tokyo and she is seducing the 36 or 34 (?) Year old main protagonist to have sex with her (this was before the protagonist and reader know that she's sadako). As a 32 year old man myself the thought of 19 y.o. predatory girl ghost comes to you, seducing you, and even make you have sex with her is so horrifying that I literally had to play vidya for 8 hours straight to get rid of that thoughts away from my head after reading that novel

this was on purpose and the ending scene always sucked

The only reason the ring ever got traction was because the actual tape showed body horror

I was about to mention this. Zoomers shat themselves from Roblox backroom games and 3am spooky phone calls gone wrong on YouTube. It's almost like we all had things we use to enjoy that changed over time due to exposure, maturity, and general cultural shifts. Crazy that zoomies can't comprehend

no it didn't. if anything my generation is the one that got obsessed with horror films as schlock, and intentionally went on to make schlocky overly gory everything as a way to honor the genre and reject japanese existential/spiritual horror bullshit. and fuck was dealing with those people fucking obnoxious.

Yeah...
Times were different. Movies were different.
Zombie girl crawling out of the TV screen was revolutionary back then.

Looks trite to you, but that's because you've seen a trillion spin offs and homages to it since.
Getting smug about it is like listening to Elvis or Buddy Holly or something and saying "that's not rock".
Sure, it's soft now, but for its time it was new.

Yes, I admit it. I was in the theater when I first saw it. The theater was packed and everyone went apeshit. It's one of my fondest theater memories because it's the only time I was ever actually scared watching a movie.

As a kid this legitimately scared me so bad I couldn't watch it. I just watched the Japanese version and this version again and it was completely fine. Still a little nervous in the well scene but it's because you don't know what will happen, less scary when you do. Heard people saying the 4th kind is terrfying but it was nothing to me. I guess only Sinister made me a bit uncomfortable.
