The media despised Nixon, so they did everything they could to ruin his reputation. Boomers had grown up with their electric friend and it had never lied to them before, so why would it be lying to them about Nixon now?

But considering all of the unethical, illegal, and immoral stuff that even state-level politicians get away with, what Nixon's people did just seems tame, almost forgettable. He was bringing everyone's sons back home from Vietnam and the Silent Generation/GIs/Boomers thanked him by destroying him

He was 100% set up, even if you assume he ordered the break in, which there's no actual evidence for, the watergate burglars basically just stood around and waited for the cops to show up and then James McCord, the "leader" and supposedly ex-CIA agent just handed the cops all their drivers licenses in a bag. Who the fuck does that in a legit robbery, brings their IDs puts them in a bag and hands them to the cops at the first sign of trouble?

Then McCord immediately went to work blabbing to the courts that he was "ex" CIA and every other detail possible to make sure the story became international news.

Anyone could tell it was a set up from the beginning, especially Nixon which is why he freaked out.
