Lex‘s character basically just boils down to him being wildly insecure and needing praise to feel like he’s not worthless. Guy is strong but is so much of an annoying fag that he’s not really loved. Lex is usually written to be smarter than Mr. Terrific and if he’s not in this incarnation then it’s still close enough for Lex to think he’s smarter and not get triggered by the suspicion he’s inferior.

The problem is that in this movie i don't see why Superman would cause Lex Luthor to feel that way.
The movie does a poor job in presenting Superman as this ideal and important hero everyone looks up to and is talking about. The other heroes seem more important and incompetent, and even if you ignore that and focus just on the popularity the movie shows the characters, normal civilians, not really taking Superman that seriously. He seems to average a guy as a superhero to elicit this level of obsession.

The only thing i could see this feeling more believable is if they went with the Smallville route of them best past friends/enemies from their time back in Smallville.

I'm kind of surprised you guys need things this spelled out for you in a movie. This one starts assuming that both the audience and the world of the movie know who Superman is. Opening text says he's been Supermanning for three years already.
