were milenials in 2006 really so stupid that they didn'tget the Sopranos ending and harrased david chase over it? It was understandable and clearly set up in my opinion.

How do you get through 6 seasons of this show staunchly refusing to give a shit about continuity, character arcs and resolving narrative tension and then get disappointed when the ending is consistent with that?

Millenials were still children or teens at the time, Gen X and Boomers were the Sopranos audience while it was airing

Who cares about consistency?
I just want a satisfying ending where things have proper buildup and payoff.

Imagine if the ending actually showed Tony getting shot but then just abruptly end like the actual ending. Would you be out here defending this crap without the pretentious cut to black shit?

It's the same thing as Lost where people who hadn't watched the show for years, or possibly ever, suddenly tuned back in for the finale and didn't get any of the context leading up to it

The payoff worked for me. The tension in that scene is crazy and there are so many details that telegraph what's about to happen. Gonna go out on a limb and say you got filtered.

You're talking about tension in the scene.
I'm talking about the narrative build up, a good ending completes a dramatic story arc, Sopranos' ending doesn't.

You have to understand, TV was better then. We weren't so used to being rugpulled/bait'n'switched/hornswoggled by the TV shows we were watching. The writers had less contempt for us as an audience, that didn't really start happening until the mid 10s.

The Wire had a dumb, cliché ending. Did you want the Sopranos to end with smiling face shots and subtitles telling you that Paulie died surfing at 90? You're so fucking dumb.

Shows can be good in different ways! I personally prefer the wire but I'm glad Sopranos exists and the narrative subversion of which the ending is an integral part is essential to why it's so good. Like I said I don't know how you watch 6 seasons of this show without picking up on that.

the "narrative buildup" of the episode is everything cuts to black before you know you've even been shot.

>entire show is about the end of organized crime
>last episode is how it'll all be over before you realize it

the reality is the ending was so controversial and divisive because they didn't have a dream sequence with another therapy session with melfi where they explain what happened to the audience. the harsher reality is the show was only as big as it was because of the therapy sessions that existed solely to explain what was happening and what it meant to the audience.

The previous episode ends with a flashback (the only time this happens in the entire series) to a scene from the first episode of the season where Tony tells Bobby that the only way life ends for him is either in jail or getting shot and Bobby saying "You probably don't even hear it when you get shot"

And in case that wasn't enough there's another scene mid-season where Silvio and some guy are having dinner and an assassin comes in and shoots the guy before Silvio even knows what's happening, which Silvio then specifically comments on to Tony.

It's not subtle what the intent was at all unless you didn't watch the rest of the season or weren't paying attention.

Did Junior order the final hit on Tony? If you paid attention to the episode its pretty clear Junior is faking his dementia. I think he's still the Boss and was playing Tony the entire time.

It did its job. Here people are still discussing it years later. And like Chase said it's the end of the line either way. He either goes to jail or gets killed. Carlo flipped and shit was coming down anyway. What did you wanna see him go on the run or die of a ripe old age? His story has to end somewhere. And by the end there's only two real options. In either case Tony is fucked.

The whole show builds up to how pointless and violent Tony's life is, with many characters dying the same way as Tony. All of Tony's persistence and bloodspilling finally catches up to him at the exact moment he's having the first proper family moment. How is this not an appropriate pay-off? There was no better way to end the show, except maybe Tony's losing his family and being alone in the end, but that'd be a repeat from The Godfather and wouldn't be any more true to the story than what we got.
