Parasite Eve came up with the idea of making a story where that microscopic symbiotic life inside us has its own will that it can exert on the world (actual mitochondria don't do that last time I checked) similar to how George describes Midichlorians in OP's image.

No shit they're going to talk about the spiritual and material influences and the midichlorians (mitochondria) being mediators of the 2 realms.
