It made me think a little, was a very comfy movie but I don't beleive I took away any serious ideas from it. It does make me miss simple shots and less clutter in frames, wish more films today had that. What did you think of it?

I always thought it was some high brow super difficult movie so I never watched. I'm happy I got around to it though, I agree it was a comfy watch. Pretty funny too.

watched it a couple months ago. it was really good imo. almost every scene was shot beautifully. as for lessons or serious ideas, i guess it was trying to say that you cant cheat death or everyone has a time that you cant escape/shouldnt fear.

The procession through the village and the scene with the trumpets fucked my shit up ngl. Realistic apocalypse films scare me

Has anyone watched Wild Strawberries? Those are my 2 favorite Bergman films. Not sure what to watch next

fun fact they went bankrupt when shooting this or had very little money left so in the end when theyre doing the danse macabre, they used different actors.

The movie deals with existentialism and skepticism problems, yet not correctly.
If there is no God or afterlife, then nothing that we do matters, since you will always arrive at the same destination no matter what. A rapist will be at the same destination than the greatest man on earth, and a person who suicides at 20 will arrive at the same destination than someone who lived until 110. So why would anything matter? The movie "solution" to this is "helping others" (He helped Joseph and Mary escape from death). Yet, if you got to the point of thinking about existentialism, this solution is very empty. You can help others, but that will not change their destination. You will arrive at nothingness, they will arrive at nothingness, their children too and their grandchildren too.

while i said i took nothing of note one thing i'll admit is that the entire witch burning scene and the village procession made me glad that we're no longer as ignorant as we used to be. It also cemented the fact to me that my faith should only be between me and my deity without anyone in between.

I didn't really look at it through the lense of it being existentialist but that may be why the ending scene really had no impact on me I guess...I just kind of thought it was anti climactic but then again it's death.

The Virgin Spring is very underrated.
