More like This Is Not Funny.

What's the appeal? I haven't laughed once during the movie.

I mean, it's a slow burn like all of Guest's work. But it unfolds and unfurls over multiple viewings. To the point where some of the lines will eventually stick with you for the rest of your life.

I didn't really get it the first time either. Though, I was 13 years old...
I've since watched it about a dozen more times over the years. Absolute classic.

it appropriately parodies bands like Motley Crue, Kiss, AC/DC, Aerosmith and more. You don't have to love that mainstream type of rock to see the humor, I like it because theres not a single comedy remotely like it

I think the music itself is where the bulk of the comedy lies. The songs are genuinely good, with lyrics that are obviously written for comedy, but still almost come off like real genuine 1980s glam rock. Even them going back through the eras, doing a bratty 60s garage rock song "Gimme Some Money" is just so fucking funny to me.

Shit like them trying (and failing) to harmonize "Heartbreak Hotel" over Elvis' grave...

Nigel's beautiful piano piece being revealed as "Lick My Love Pump". It's just hilarious, man.

Armadillos in their trousers..

These are some of the greatest improv comics of all time, who can all play instruments exceptionally well. You have goddamn Harry Shearer (who went on to voice half of Springfield), playing the hell out of his bass and stuffing a cucumber down his pants. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

>"Gimme Some Money"

You can slip that song onto an oldies radio station and no one would notice or question it. It really sounds like a song from that era. But it also shows that the band is just trend following and want fame and wealth rather than are genuinely in it for the art. Satire and exaggeration fo rock stars.

Their songs are spot on parodies of real songs and shows the creators are genuine fans of 60's to 80s rock songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrJlyapt6OY

but wouldn't the band members be REALLY pushing it and be really old in this universe? I like the idea of them changing genres and just follow whatever's popular, and i think bands like Jefferson Starship basically did just that.

This would be like John Lenon and Paul McCarthy going full heavy metal in 1982.

just a daft improv comedy thing. they were told how a scene would start and end, and basically just rambled in-character.

i don't think it's laugh-out-loud funny but it's oddly comfy. and it IS a good parody of the larger-than-life bands (and biopics) at the time.

Much funnier movies from the 1980's:
1. Repo Man
2. Raising Arizona
3. Brazil
4. After Hours
5. The Naked Gun
6. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
7. Beverly Hills Cop
Each and every one of these are better in terms of comedy and the jokes and the way they were made.

Fuck, even The Blues Brothers shits on This is Spinal Tap.

So shove your zoomer buzzword up your ass.

>do zoomers not have rock bands? when did this happen?

Hip Hop and pop singing production models showed that "bands" are not needed. You either sample something else, or you have an in-house band produce backing bits, or usually just something electronic. The creative team is now the singer and producer.

This allows for faster production and output, and more likelihood that the there isn't going to be a messy break up.

A zoomer band is a band made of zoomers retard. Just because a zoomer listens to the Beatles doesn't make them a zoomer band.

its a movie made to satirise the entire rock n roll lifestyle and everything around it. If you grew up around musicians and wannabes trying to make it, this movie is hysterical.

If you're some zoomer or sheltered millennial who never hung out with bands irl, much of the humour is lost on you. You literally cannot relate to the movies themes and jokes.

I think it's genuinely one of the funniest films ever made, but to each their own.
I'm just not sure about the sequel. They'd have to really nail down the current state of the music industry before commenting on it. Obviously they need to do a "reunion tour" type thing with the classic songs, but there needs to be some element where the current guard is pushing back against them. Like forcing them to use Autotune in the studio, doing a feature with some retarded mumble rapper, etc. Just not entirely confident this can be done in a truly laugh-out-loud funny way. Especially with like 70+ year old men at the helm.

its a lot more of a meta-comedy on biopics in general than just a straight up comedy. its very much over the top in the type of arcs and story beats that need to happen to further this bullshit madeup biopic, whilst also being a very nice musical journey from the 50s to today, with also a lot of meta humour not just regarding biopic movies, but music in general. it also really feels its lenght, because its so stuffed with content, you actually do feel like witnessing a lifetime, which i thought was neat. fucking amadeus doesnt feel as long and its like 3 hours long

I provided quite a few examples in this very thread and presented a list of movies as a reference of what I find funny, even a youtube link but you've obviously ignored all that.

>Is it the writing? The actor performances?
Oh it's definitely the writing.
Only a simpleton would find a joke about a band member hiding a vegetable in his pants to be a funny one.
>DUDE HE'S FAKING HAVING A MASSIVE COCK BECAUSE HE'S INSECURE LMAO
Why was it covered in foil at all? To make it trigger a metal detector. This is poor writing, there's no reason to use the foil so the writer had to come up with this bullshit.
Spinal Tap is filled with such unfunny and shallow jokes

The acting is alright.
Btw Christopher Guest mogs Chuck in that regard 100%, he was the best actor in this movie.

Spinal Tap is really the only of his films where Christopher himself actually seems to take up the most screen real estate. Nigel Tufnel is clearly the goofiest and most vocal member of the band. In his subsequent films, he really takes a backseat to the ensemble cast.

Best in Show is honestly brilliant. But it's got very similar pacing, and that same improvised vibe. The cast is just unreal though. His movies really were a launching pad for a ton of comedians over the years.
