Lol no
>>Brilliant animation, soundtrack and story
Eh, all those aspects are at least memorable I'd say but really overall nothing about the music or animation is actually high quality, and the stories are just pulp. And I say this as someone who owns the soundtrack on vinyl.

One of Netflix's flagship shows is a direct homage to Heavy Metal and was originally intended to be a reboot. South Park had an entire episode that was an homage to it too.

I guess by the ignorant zoomers... South Park dedicated a full show to it. It had a resurgance 10-15 years ago. Bah, maybe its me getting old.

Who cares about the critics. Its a Bakshi-production, could've been his magnus opus if he had a disney-eye for quality and ambition. As it is, its a product of its time. Though the Hard Rock soundtrack is fitting and great, it was heavy back in the days but sounds like regular pop rock now, the fresh sounds have become a bit monotone, perhaps even sounding "old" to the youngsters now. The animation, while evidently brilliant at times (the rotoscoping was cool) is a bit uneven and doesn't measure to the classical disney-standard in comparison. Its mobious-like but how many are familiar with him now. Comics aren't as big as it was. The story is moody and has some depth to it with its focus on evil and the chaos it causes but also is a bit sketchy and divergent.

I'd liken it to Crumb's or Bakshi's animation, than any anime.

Heavy Metal was always about the underground scene in comics/graphic novels....If you're not reading about Superman saving kittens from trees, you're reading half-naked woman being drawn by some French perverted artist getting fucked silly before saving the universe....

>>Brilliant animation, soundtrack and story
No doubt, for the early 80s.

>> Absolutely panned by ''critics''
Because those critics back then believed cartoons should be for kids only.

>>Completely forgotten nowadays
Netflix's "Love, Death, and Robots", is basically "Heavy nuMetal"....same aesthetic, somewhat woke-sloppy, not as gratuitous. ...still passable, imo.

...as for the Heavy Metal BRAND, the former publishers and big name artists from back in the day are trying to kickstart the magazine again.....so there is still a cult following.

The animation is brilliant, the soundtrack is pretty good, but the story is mediocre. The framing device is meh, some of the stories are funny or have good action but none of them are that great. The New York one is retarded outside of the animation.
Making it an anthology makes sense, but those weren't even the best stories Heavy Metal magazine had published up to that point.

The soundtrack has made it hard for the movie's physical media releases to be in circulation for very long, plus the tumblr/twitter generation would whine about the sexual stuff.

Just an an anecdote, I remember the old movie review site, the Agony Booth, reviewed this sometime around 2010 or so, panning it, and they got such immense backlash over it they had to let another contributor on the site give a second, more positive opinion.

"But why I must go, is cartoon, no?"
"Umm... it's a new policy at the theater... no unaccompanied kids."

Needless to say, she was not happy once the movie got going but actually didn't drag us out of there and sat thru the whole flick. She did slap me upside the head in the parking lot afterward.

I would absolutely kill for another Heavy Metal film, animated or live action. Every single issue is just sumptuous and the artwork you can find in them are simply incredible and would no doubt give Hollywood a run for its money to replicate. Its also probably the reason you wouldn't ever get anything like it:
>women are feminine, hot, in shape, and have huge boobs and shapely toned asses
>the men are masculine, violent, and brutal
>war and combat depicted in all its gory detail
>themes of sex and violence
>amazing science fiction and fantasy
>adult themes

They wouldn't never touch anything like it which is what makes the two film so unique because of how underground it was, which just goes to show the passion the creators had for it.

Akiraโ€™s animation and designs are basically timeless. I feel like you could show some Gen A kids who like anime Akira and they wonโ€™t complain about it looking old despite it being a 40 year old anime. Shit like Heavy Metal and Fritz The Cat are dated and quite frankly gross to look at even though I respect the former for its place in animation it just doesnโ€™t hold up

I think a lot of it had to do with the times. It was a much more artistic and futuristic time period. We really thought that the future would be similar to things that were in science fiction movies back then. We had such high hopes.

The airplane story was written by Dan O'Bannon, one of the two writers of the original Alien. He had the idea of gremlins crawling through the fuselage of a plane and later used that concept for the second act of alien once it was on board. The animated short from heavy metal is basically a retelling of the same concept.

Soโ€ฆ..what, exactly, was the Loc-Nor? When I first saw this film in the 80s when I was a kid (I think it was a drive-in theatre which was still a thing back then) I just remembered it was this trippy evil ball thing that usually just melted you, but sometimes it would hang out with you for a while and give you powers. I re-watched it online during COVID while on a nostalgia kick - and my impression remained. Was it an alien? A Lovecraftian entity? Just a literary device (McGuffin) with magic powers like the One Ring? Why was it seemingly targeting specifically this one little girl and why did it want to talk to her instead of just melting her like everyone else it wanted dead? I understand that it didnโ€™t melt the dad until he came back home with it because it needed the dad to transport it to its intended target first, but why was it so important for it to monologue with the daughter?

Yeah, my take is this: The green evil thing for whatever reason opened the door to the fantasy realm to the real world causing the girl-who is Taarna in that realm only-to finally realize her counterpart identity and when threatened with annihilation, she awakened in reality and became Taarna for all realities.
Pretty metal, huh?

>was it so important for it to monologue with the daughter
Because that's the premise for the framing device that lets the anthology happen.
Each story is completely unrelated to the others with the exception that at some point a glowing green ball will show up (it doesn't even need to be important to the plot, like hanover fist is just goofing with a marble before he hulks out, and the robo-fucker lady just has it as a broach).
Its really not worth trying to excise some greater meaning from the overall plot because there really isn't one.
Its like watching tales from the crypt and trying to incorporate the host segment with the story he presents.

In the Blu-Ray extras, the anthology framing was different. It was the father taking his girl to some sort of magic carnival, where each ride showed her a different vision, and at the end, he revealed to her she was Taarna. Somehow that got changed to the Loc-Nar tormenting the little girl instead.

Wound up with a drinking problem, a shitload of regrets, a ton of people who won't speak to me anymore, and commitment/abandonment/rejection issues. Worst of all, I wound up dropping out.
I wish I had just gone to class, studied, and gotten a STEM degree.

Genuinely two of the best comics ever printed that elevate the medium. Helps that he works with two of the greatest visual artists that were able to translate his batshit concepts and ideas into masterpieces of pen and ink and paint.
