Zod was very dangerous and it was impossible to reason with him. Superman had no choice

They were battling and it was only in that moment Superman was able to subdue a weakened Zod after much fighting. Zod aiming for the family was the last resort he had just to spite Kal. If Superman tried to move him an inch away, his heat vision would immediately evaporate the family. He was purposefully doing it so Superman would kill him since he had nothing left to live for.

Yes. He was right. The problem is that in this movie, Clark's stance on taking a life is never explored, which is the biggest missed opportunity. Maybe we could have had him struggle more with his Kryptonian heritage, so that this choice at the end means something more than "he didn't like taking a life."
