It was considered absurd and quirky, which alienated some people. Anything that alienates a group attracts another group of people who think if they like something a lot of people don't it makes them seem more cultured/smarter for 'getting it'. This evolved into British comedy being generally perceived as being smarter, even though it isn't.

The issue is that Big Bang Theory tried to appeal to two groups. Nerds and non-Nerds. So you have episodes like the WoW episode, where everything is dumbed down (and flat out wrong) so not to confuse the non-Nerds but end up pissing off Nerds who don't like you got it wrong. Same shit happened with the South Park WoW episode. You can't level up killing zillions of boars because they stop giving XP. While you can handwave that because it's South Park, when TBBT was about 'Nerd Culture' it goes out the window. Furthermore the show gradually stopped being a Nerd show/Pop Cul show and ended up being a relationship drama show with the very basic amount of nerd culture (aka a 30 second joke about Batman or something).

Meanwhile, IT Crowd didn't try to 'glaze' (to use your term) Nerds by pretending that Nerds are just really quirky and can get hot chicks and shit if they just say silly things about comic books. They portrayed them as real people who could and their nerd stuff wasn't integral to the plot. Roy playing video games didn't become the whole point of an episode because Jen or somebody read a chatlog and thought he was cheating on her so we have to have a 10 min scene where Roy breaks up with the girl on the video game and finds out it's fucking Mos or something.

The reason people 'glaze' British comedy is that once upon a time, they were well written with good jokes and well acted. Instead of a pitch of

You can be ignorant if you want, but you're not making many good posts. You're probably going to make some nonsense post about how M.A.S.H had PoV shots or 30 Rock or something. But Peep Show combined PoV shots as being the MAJORITY of the show with internal monologues. Something that none of those shows did. The closest thing to Peep Show was the film Lady in the Lake (1948) which was shot nearly entirely PoV of the protag. But that's a film and didn't have internal monologues nor spawn the 'dry' and 'grounded' sitcoms which became popular post Peep Show.

The British aren't afraid to be mean spirited, which is something that has been slowly drained out of American sitcoms for the past 20 years. IT Crowd wasn't afraid to make them act like total assholes, whereas BBT had to make it clear they were all still well meaning friends at the end of everything.

Compare the group dynamic of the original That 70s Show to the dynamic in that abortion That 90s Show. They're all way too nice to each other in the new one, even the two girls who supposedly hate each other show almost no real animosity towards each other, the only one who even comes close to roasting anybody at all is that asian faggot and it's still barely anything.
