American Dad still had a rating of 8.0 out of ten. What has made it so entertaining through out the years?

mostly avoids politics
deep bench of side characters
crafted an offbeat sensibility that continuously morphed and got weirder
does experimental episodes every once in a while
those experiments usually work
the universe in the show is generally a nice, fun place to inhabit (this is linked to avoiding politics)

Good assessment. Do you think American Dad avoids politics more than Family Guy?

They prioritized keeping the writers interested enough to try over keeping any kind of consistensy in tone, canon or characterization. Roger in S1 is nothing like Roger in S5, who is still pretty different from Roger now. Same for Klaus, Hailey, Francine and most of the main cast. Even the extended cast pre-TBS era versus early TBS versus now are pretty different.

So basically they stayed funny by slowly turning into a multiple completely different shows as the years went on.

Without a doubt. Family Guy has several seasons where half the episodes are one flavor of political rant or another.

I haven’t really cared about newer seasons of the show. They practically cut out all the side characters like Steve’s friends and the principal, and Stan doing stuff at the CIA. It leans too much into dumb stoner humor and set ups now

This was mainly it for me. There's usually 2 episodes a season that just does its own thing, both as a breather from the usual Roger-is-the-problem-and-answer-to-everything, and but also to try shit out.

Because it's pretty much just been random shenanigans from day one and is still at it all these years later. It's never fallen into the trap of having entire episodes (or even seasons) where the driving force for everything is commentary on current events, which is what took down all the other long running comedy cartoons

there's definitely aspects of the show that are distinctly TBS era
Hayley at Sub Hub
Morning Mimosas
Tuttle being extremely prominent
Rogu
and Klaus' transformation started on Fox* but is mostly a TBS thing

Goddamn can Seth stop being a prancing faggot for one second? He's not even that a good singer, he thinks he's Sinatra and he doesn't come anywhere close.

Seth doesn't write any of this shit. He stopped writing AD like 15 years ago now.
He's just a VA with the highest EP credit at this point.

If were comparing it to family guy, which has comparable writing I’d say it’s just that every character feels unique and consistent, like in Family guy Lois Meg and I literally can’t remember the sons name, feel like they aren’t real characters.

I feel like American Dad has run it’s course and the charm is gone, they started treating Stan like a Peter-lite and Roger keeps having to jump the shark to be funny

You could say the same about Family Gay until recently. They had Peter kiss a photo of Obama, make very late jokes about January 6
