The concept was cool, as introduced in the first episode, but past that the show was... ok. Highly overrated. Her companions (purple hair girl and red hair boy) sucked, but some other characters are their powers were cool. But again, weak execution, I feel like everyone was so impressed by the premise that they went along with it.

Frieren was decent when you are in the mood for that kind of bitter sweet show. It was pretty mediocre for anything else. I actually disliked it the more it went into action and the exam arc.

It shines when focusing on reminiscing and regret.

This, the first episode and the one where the priest tricks Frieren into accepting Fern as her apprentice/care taker were genuinely great then the show becomes episodic, and then a weird shounen tournament/exam arc pops out of nowhere which just made me drop the anime.
In the hands of a better writer the show might have been better but this is a classic case where the writer didn't have the chops to fully execute the premise and just ended up floundering or falling into the same traps as other generic anime.
