Nobody actually wants to really discuss it outside of cursory overviews of what happens in the movie mentioned in passing and even then the people that give it even that much attention are usually like "yeah uh this movie's too abstract and pretentious for me to really take seriously, 0/10" just because it doesn't instantly hand them everything on a silver platter right away.
I think the way people treat Begotten is emblematic of how people treat the medium of film is a whole. There are plenty of far more confounding and subversive books out there that people are willing to engage because it's literature and literature should be hard, but the second someone produces a film that is as rewarding, but also as challenging, people snub their noses at it.
