The beauty of the first three is that the artifacts are treated with a degree of ambiguity. They exist, they have great power and humans have built cults and religions around them but they could still be far more ancient and mysterious than that. Literal aliens and time travel was too far. If they made Raiders now they would have Moses force ghost show up and blast the nazis with his eye lazers.

That's The Thing. The Thing is taken directly form that story. Also, it would be very expensive, so they would CGI Antartica and that would necessarily suck.
