For some reason I can't buy Minas Tirith as a real, lived in location. Even despite it being depicted as a megalithic city, everything feels like a small set with a handful of extras. Also, it's retarded how Osgiliath is seemingly just 10 minutes away on horseback.
>>212630779you are both zoomie and boomer, lord retarded the black
>>212630779...more retarded than Minas Tirith (and Osgiliath, and the coastal cities) being surrounded by nothing but barren gras? Not a single farm or ANYTHING. Where do they get their food from? And don't say trade, because we never see any evidence of civilians traveling anywhere (except for the elves leaving for the grey havens). Not even a boat. People just exist behind walls.
>>212630408 (OP)the part in fellowship where they get lost in the barrows is very creepy. completely powerless against ancient evil and the only way they are able to escape is by God stepping in personally. i get why they left it out of the movie since it's not really related to the rest of the plot but it's one of the most memorable parts of the book for me

i think the whole tom bombadil part is thematically important as well. the ring and what it represents is shown to be the ultimate evil in the world and will lead to the destruction of civilization if they fail in the mission but tom treats it like it's a toy or a curiosity because his power is so far above that of sauron that it has no effect on him. however for the same reason he is unwilling or uninterested in helping them out personally (with the ring at least) because it's something that has to be accomplished by mortals, exactly for the reason that they have to resist temptation in order to complete the mission.
tom's house as an idyllic version of a home is also a nice sort of bookend to the journey, i guess with the end of pelennor fields and the reunion as the other, and gives a motivation to not let evil destroy a perfect ideal of community and perhaps to return there if successful
