On one hand, it really is everything a Superman movie should be and feels like a breath of fresh air after the the shitty Snyderverse. Hoult is a surprisingly effective Luthor. I also love Gardner. I love Mr. Terrific. I love Krypto. I love Pa and Ma Kent for once, I loved the Silver Age feel with some sci-fi elements.

On the other hand though, it is still a capeshit film in 2025, and the film feels too packed. It feels like we are constantly movie with little time to breathe. There aren't enough quiet moments to just spend time to get to know the characters. Fun movie, but it isn't like it is going to save cinema like some are acting.

it's better on a second viewing. the pacing is actually really good, its just that we're not used to capeshit starting in medias res.

Gunnโ€™s humor actually isnโ€™t terrible but its placement is terrible. He canโ€™t let moments sit sometimes. We donโ€™t need a quip in every scene. The scene with Clarkโ€™s dad didnt have any quips and it was excellent.

I actually liked that it started medias res on first viewing. My problem, is that I feel like we barely got to know someone like Jimmy Olsen. He never really spent time with Clark I have a feeling some of his scenes were cut to keep the pacing up.

After all, this film went under massive reediting in the final lead up to release. Only two months ago, they were still dividing up segments of the movie with "Monday", "Tuesday", etc. title cards.

Lex is a complete piece of shit in this movie and got everything that was coming to him. Yet, I couldn't help but feel bad for him in the end. I think this proves that I feel too bad for people who would kill me if they get the chance. I need to work on removing that from my personality.

I feel like the Lois/Clark dynamic needed one more scene where Lois really reconsiders her view on their relationship into something more positive. It went from โ€œIโ€™m thinking about breaking up with himโ€ to โ€œI love you tooโ€ without her admitting that to herself first. Really, I think Gunn missed an opportunity to have her admit something like that while she was venting to Mr Terrific.

He just wasn't remotely intimidating, every movement and all the lines he had were despicable in the wrong way. I guess the fighting game command shit was alright, but the monologue at the end of the movie was just fucking awful, it felt so canned and forced.

>>212634777
They had zero chemistry, it was similar to Adams/Cavill. Could easily be blamed on the script, though, since we only got like 2 fucking Clark scenes in total. Really just a letdown of a movie. Probably could've been fixed if they didn't force the Justice Gang so hard. They easily could've come at the end. The whole goddamn film was basically in the trailers.

I don't think it was nearly that bad lmao, but I do think only getting a small # of Clark scenes hurt the film substantially.

The thing is that I loved the Justice Gang, but they came at the expense of Lois and Superman's best pal, Jimmy Olsen.

The Pocket Universe portion of the plot felt too fantastical even for a comic book movie and especially because it's the first film in this new universe. Like it genuinely felt like shit went off the rails when Element Man appears and Lex Luthor intentionally destroying Metropolis was dumb. How the hell will we ever get a President Lex movie at this point? Maybe the whole Barovia plot would have been way better too if Gunn decided to go for President Lex Luthor, idk

The movie lacks a certain reverence for Superman. The scene with all the people chanting Superman before they fight is great, but there's very little otherwise where people are chanting and cheering Superman on, which is quintessential when telling a Superman story. They evacuated Metropolis and made it a horrifically sterile fight locale.

>On one hand, it really is everything a Superman movie should be
This is such a fucking forced meme, it's not anywhere near a Superman film. His Clark Kent doesn't even try to behave differently to Superman, he just has glasses and broccoli hair. He doesn't behave as Superman should, he keeps saying "dude" and shouting in people's faces. He's constantly getting beaten up, and at no point do you feel like he has a situation under control. There's no sense of purity and hope from him. The only time he could've felt actually heroic, he gets replaced by a pensioner with a bowl cut creating giant middle fingers, no class at all. The other threat of the black hole gets dealt with by a black dude with a T on his face. The dog constantly appears to ruin the vibe. Lex Luthor could've been a kino villain, but instead hired the most onions-looking slenderman loser they could, who just acted like a child throughout the whole thing. And then a pointless "cameo" of some weird girl being a whore Supergirl. It all just feels like The Suicide Squad again.

I'm so fucking sick of shills pushing these films, I fucking love Superman but we've not had a good Superman film since Christopher Reeve.

Pocket universe rift that destroys a city without killing anyone, cringe unfunny justice gang, silly kaiju that looks like a kids toy, annoying Indian that weโ€™re supposed to care about, annoying bitch Lois berating Superman about saving people, cheap knockoff of black noir Ultraman, hamfisted attempt at political commentary with Ukraine/Russia stand-ins, cheap CGI and weird fish eye camera lens, Jor-El is an alien with a rape fetish, cringe music sequences that go on too long, CGI dog that has far too much screen time and takes away from Superman being the hero, choppy editing and uninspired score. Apart from that it was alright.

He was more boy than scout, his saving everything just felt more like a direct answer to MoS than actually doing it for the sake of it. The whole movie felt like it was only doing things 180 to that, like it was desperately crying "look guys it's opposite". Too meta, not enough care put into the film because it feels like 4 scrapped movies shoved into one.

Was adding two irrelevant post-credit scenes, part of Gunn's plan?

They way they handled Lex really gives me the impression theyโ€™re gonna finish with All-Star where he finally develops an understanding of what Clark goes through by gaining his powers

The thing wasn't made in a vacuum. This movie is a direct response. Worse than Whedon, with his shitty humor, Gunn tackles this task with breakneck speed and no stakes. Yes, we get it, he wanted to own the chuds that liked those other movies. I don't particularly like snyderman, but this shit is no good either.

MY UNBIASED REVIEW
The movie itself is fine. It's definitely a course correction overall. Gunn should just be a writer though. The directing was easily the worst part of the movie followed by the overpacking of characters and extremely hit and miss humour.
There were several directorial choices that almost actively take you out of the film
>the weird 3 decades, 3 years, 3 months, 3 days motif
>the constant overexposure (must be due to heavy CGI being added in post) that makes everyone look albino... Lois really suffered from this at points
>some of the more unorthodox whip pan shots that race from one character to another character as they all stand in a circle and speak... makes it feel like it was made for tv
In fact, that might actually be it, the whole thing has this expensive Smallville feel to it that definitely comes across as amateur at points. Some of the tv director decisions land, like watching Mr T dance and fight from Lois' POV in the bubble... .but most of them don't land and fall flat
The humour is borderline bad at points... off the top of my head
>Jimmy Goblin being a "stud"
>Everything to do with the tik tok thot dating Lex (Eve?) she is probably the weakest actor in the whole thing
>Hawkgirl screeches are extremely awkward
>Jimmy's rejections were funny like once or twice but shouldn't take up nearly 10 minutes of the entire run time
>Krypto doing the "puny God" routine
>Lex being a borderline incel
>The really weird subplot with the ballerina in the cabin in the woods cage
>The gay moustache journalist from the Daily Planet permaraging
Actually bar Lois, the casting for the DP was pretty awful. Not that they are individually bad actors, but they all lacked any genuine chemistry. Could say the same about Moner. Whereas Fillion and Mr T work well together. Metamorpho was another serious miss.
The music in the film is good however they need to actually go all out on the score.

Overall a 6/10. If you love supershit it'll probably be a 7 for you.
