There was a decent streak of time where sam jackson was the highest paid actor in hollywood.
Not because he got a shitload of money per role, but because he would show up in anything as long as the check cleared and he had the time in his schedule. And by busting his ass and working constantly on top of getting disney bux he set up a nice little nest egg while he could.
Malcolm McDowell used to talk about the same thing, it wasn't his job to decide if a movie was good or not, he's an actor, his job is to show up and do as much as possible with his character.

He had to keep funding his multiple homes, an island, and a t-rex skeleton he won in an auction. The dude was in so many dumb movies. If he was given poor direction, then he just plays himself. He's got the image of a wild artist, and he performs for pay.

Nah I'm pretty sure he paid all that off years ago. Now he can do a Sion Sono movie or Pig or show up in Dead By Daylight because he likes it and just do cash movies in between.

>'Through it all, Cage says, as he was collecting movie roles in an attempt to earn the money he owed, he never switched off his actor brain. “When I was doing four movies a year, back-to-back-to-back, I still had to find something in them to be able to give it my all,” he told GQ. “They didn’t work, all of them. Some of them were terrific, like Mandy, but some of them didn’t work. But I never phoned it in. So if there was a misconception, it was that. That I was just doing it and not caring. I was caring.”'
oh cute. I was under the impression he was upset with mandy because he didn't get the role he wanted in it.

sam jackson also said he picks projects on what he'd actually watch IRL which means they'd do well at the box office

He got in trouble with the IRS for his overspending, so now he has to take any shitty old role they offer him so he can pay them back

His commentary on Vampire's Kiss is really good and he talks a lot about why he likes acting. It's also funny watching something like Willy's Wonderland or Mom & Dad realizing he's again just doing german expressionism again.
