Gunn just made him a dweeb, he doesn't seem like Rex Mason swashbuckling explorer. It's weird as well that Stagg industries exists in the movie but when we see Sapphire Stagg she's living in a shitty apartment and looks poor.

He's a prisoner of Lex Luthor, who has his baby son hostage. He's forced to watch a man die and cries. He saves Superman though, who saves him and his baby in turns, helps the heroes at the end, and shows a bit of the fun side when he says he likes the Justice Gang name.
