Is there anything to the claim CRT TVs are better or is this just the vinyl hipster cope that the scratchiness gives it โ€œsoulโ€?

LCD/LED tvs have always been inferior to CRTs. The only reason LCD/LED became more popular was because they were cheaper to produce and thinner. Imagine if suddenly you could sell more tvs for the same price and spend less. The entire industry made you think you were getting a better product. Its why CRTs have now become a hot commodity, they're not making them any more

Only for old video games that were designed to work on them. There's no film that's going to be improved by a CRT, if its blurry on an HDTV then its still going to be blurry on a CRT.

Modern video is far better than CRT in every way. CRT-er's are akin to the other similar-styled movements:
> the mechanical keyboard crowd
> the tube amp instead of digital amp crowd
> the reel-to-reel instead of vinyl crowd

CRT is too heavy, too hot, uses too much power, is limited in contrast, is too large, and gives you inferior performance. Other than that it's OK.

My LG OLED already pisses me off by springing popups on me demanding I update then making me agree to new terms of service I'm sure aren't legally enforceable and only exist to inform me of new ways they're spying on everything I do. Why can't screens just take a signal and display it?
And don't get me started on all the enhancements they try to do that delay the output and usually make it look worse anyway.

When I got mom her first LCD screen she was complaining about how bad it looked. I did not believe her, and explained that the LCD had a higher resolution. She was insistent that it did not look as good. So I set up a side by side comparison.

She was right. The CRT was much brighter and had much better contrast between the light and dark regions. It looked way better. However, I think with OLEDs, the difference is not as big now a days.

The difference between CRTs and new TVs is almost as big as watching film vs digital. All TVs nowadays have a thin, flimsy screen. They're paper thin. CRTs have depth to the image, thick sturdy glass. For gaming, CRTs are better for dark games like Doom or Stalker. I tried playing Stalker on an LCD monitor and everything was washed out and I couldn't see anything in the dark, even with a flashlight in game. When I used a CRT, I could actually see in the dark in games. Also, they're better for visual novels or anything that has to be upscaled. The upscaling on a CRT is smoother. However, I hear a lot of people like the new LED stuff. It's getting harder to find Trinitrons online. And the price has gone way up.

This. Retards bought bigger screens so they could sit further away from them, some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

More recently LCDs have finally overtaken CRTs though, at least in terms of resolution. I love my 4k monitor, I have the kind of space that LCD should've given me 20 years ago, except it didn't because Moore's law died. Until that point, LCDs only really made sense for people who were too poor for plasmas, but still wanted a large screen for their living room so they could push their couch back against the wall. Give it another 20 years and maybe we'll have BFI as a standard so miniLED can finally catch up in motion clarity, I guess.

That's not how physics works. If you had a large enough screen, and a precise enough yoke, then maybe. But the phosphor layers take up physical space.

But that's like saying LCDs have theoretically unlimited resolution because you could just build a production line to make a massive one and then sit 2 miles away. Unlimited resolution as a concept doesn't make any sense anyway, because the eye has a physical limit of resolution based on brightness, which is why stars can be tiny but don't just look like singular points, they bloom beyond that due to their intensity.

>Newer TVs are "better" but the software operating them is dogshit.

Would be really cool to have one of those rarer widescreen models. A nice high end one that will last for 50 years.

>Why can't screens just take a signal and display it?
projectors are still this way. I have a JVC NP5 that's got no smart slop.
