Was Turtlemania really that huge back in the early 90s?

How did a movie that shouldn't have worked not only manage to beat the odds but have actual heart & passion behind it?

>Was Turtlemania really that huge back in the early 90s?
Yes, it piggybacked off Batman's earlier success nicely

Because the creators managed to talk to the director and explained how they could get an emotional core to the characters beyond the Saturday morning cartoon.

The cartoon was late 80s. I was the right age and knew of the cartoon and was hyped for the movie.

You may not be aware of this but there was "huge" black skater board trend then. At very least noticeable.

Yeah that doesn't prove that skateboards automatically = black coded. Especially since they were surfer dudes. Even /co/mblr doesn't pretend they were black coded, nobody who watched the OG cartoon or read the OG Eastman and Laird stuff thought they were black coded and that had nothing to do with their appeal.

The OG comics were only edgy compared to the cheesy OG cartoon. They were inspired by Howard the Duck and early Cerebus the Aardvaark so they tended to be wacky even if they had serious moments.

The toys were popularised by the cartoons. Action figures were huge moneymakers back when very few kids had access to a PC and computer games. After computer games and consoles took off, physical toys started to decline in popularity. Nowadays only manchilds buy action figures for the "collection".

My dad took me to see this movie after it had already been out for a while and we had to queue for hours to get in. I have never queued for a movie since that one time, that's how huge it was at the time.

It was good because it almost perfectly followed a plot from the comics. It was an independent film and it was in part produced by Golden Harvest-- a legit martial arts film production company.
Jim Henson's creature company made the suits and directed by Steve Barron, who directed some of the best music videos ever made.
It was huge and the TMNT-mania was a monster.of a craze.
I don't think another property really took hold of a generation of kids to the same degree until Pokemon
